EARTH: Ochre Painting from Warmun, 13 March - 14 April 2012
Warmun Art Centre, located 200km south of Kununurra in the East Kimberley, holds a significant place in the history of contemporary Australian art. It is here that Rover Thomas and Queenie McKenzie both painted their country, using ochres dug from their land, and it is the leadership of these pioneers which continues to encourage generations of Aboriginal artists to maintain their cultural connections to country.
The rich velvety paintings from Warmun draw on both traditional Ngarrangkarni (Dreaming) stories and the artists' contemporary experience.
Tim Melville Gallery is proud to present this significant exhibition of Ochre Painting to a New Zealand audience.
