“I was raised in my grandparent’s home, they were both creatives in the traditional Māori art of raranga and whakairo. In 2016 I gained an MFA with First Class Honours at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design.
Today I live in our whānau homestead on Turongo Street in Otorohanga. I have a small studio at the back of the house where I paint most days. At the front of our house is a wharenui ‘Teohaoturoa’ that my grandfather built at the time I was born. I based my Masters degree research on this meeting house. It is also the foundation for my practice as an artist.
As a painter I am interested in representation of Māori within a context of the European history of painting. I have investigated the techniques and subject matter of early European painters of New Zealand and abroad.
I paint the everyday lives of people in my community. I pay particular attention to relationships between family members, intertribal relationships, politics and environments that show nuances between our culture and 21st century life.”
