Aboriginal Artists

everywhen

October - November 2021

The term everywhen was coined in 1956 by the Australian anthropologist William Stanner.
“One cannot fix ‘The Dreaming’ in time”, he wrote.
“It was, and is, everywhen. It has an unchallengeable sacred authority [that] we non-Indigenous Australians shall not understand fully except as a complex of meanings”.

Stanner was also known for popularising the term “the Great Australian Silence” – the “cult of disremembering” which reduced Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to a “melancholy footnote” in Australia’s long history.

He described the violent encounters between European settlers and the Indigenous population – “invasion, massacres, ethnic cleansing and resistance” – as having been almost erased from history. And he characterised the erasure as “a cult of forgetfulness practised on a national scale”.

One of the critical aspects of Aboriginal art is its ability to operate as a powerful counterpoint to ‘forgetfulness’.

The Yolngu leader Galarrwuy Yunupingu AM, then Chairman of the Northern Land Council, stated in 1988:

“When we paint – whether it is on our bodies for ceremony, or on bark or canvas for the market – we are not just painting for fun or profit.
We are painting as we have always done to demonstrate our continuing link with our country and the rights and responsibilities we have to it.
Furthermore, we paint to show the rest of the world that we own this country, and that the land owns us.
Our painting is a political act.”
