Sarah Guppy’s artistic practice encompasses painting, gilding, sculpture and pottery. Born in Auckland, she moved to London in 1978 and enrolled at Morley College where art classes with Maggi Hambling – in Sarah’s words – “changed my life.”
“As a teenager in the 1960s Maggi had trained at the famously bohemian School of Painting and Drawing at Benton End in Suffolk, which was run by artists Cedric Morris (1889-1982) and Lett Haines (1894-1978).
“During my time at Morley College Maggi would frequently refer to the influence of Cedric and Lett, as well as to their close friendship with Frances Hodgkins – a connection which captivated me.”
“Maggi had a passion for paint and for theatre, both of which were drawn out of the students in my class through compulsory end-of-year performances and a 2-week summer school in the beautiful Suffolk landscape.”
“For me, looking at other artists and their work is a constant joy.
I’m always intrigued to see what they found and how they got there, and I particularly admire Cedric Morris’s paintings for their immediate and joyful subject matter.
Many of his works feature the flowers he grew in his garden and the life and landscape around him and I can feel a whakapapa of influence running down the years from he and Lett Haines and Frances Hodgkins, to my own teacher Maggi.”
“This suite of 12 new paintings is an homage to my teachers.”
