WARMUN ARTISTS

Land Art

24 September - 19 October 2013

To coincide with Art Week Auckland Tim Melville is proud to present a new suite of ochrepaintings from Warmun, Western Australia.

Warmun artists have built an international reputation for their rich velvety paintings made using hand-collected and crushed natural pigments and charcoal from their land in the East Kimberley. Each work is made in a luscious array of earth tones, drawing simultaneously on traditional Ngarrankarni (Dreaming) stories and contemporary perspectives.

Following the leadership of the late artists Rover Thomas and Queenie McKenzie a new generation of senior artists, including Mabel Juli, Churchill Cann, Phyllis Thomas and Lena Nyadbi, are now re-presenting Gija culture to the world in a fresh and innovative way.

In one of the most significant art events of 2013 Lena Nyadbi recently installed an extraordinary 700m2 artwork on the rooftop of the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris. This permanent work represents an ancestral story about the creation of diamonds and is
designed to be viewed from the nearby Eiffel Tower.

Warmun artists’ work is held in the major public collections in Australia as well as Auckland’s Chartwell Collection. This is Warmun’s fourth exhibition at Tim Melville.
