Warmun Art Centre was established in 1998 and is located 200km south of Kununurra in the spectacular surrounds of the East Kimberley region of Western Australia.

The national and international reputation of Warmun art is due in great part to the leadership of Gija artists such as Rover Thomas and Queenie McKenzie. Today a new generation of artists, including Mabel Juli and Lena Nyadbi, are rendering and re-presenting Gija culture with confidence and diversity. This exciting new work transcends cultural boundaries, placing Warmun art and artists at the forefront of contemporary art in Australia.

Gija artists paint their country using only ochres dug from their land. Each canvas is painted using hand-collected and crushed natural pigments in a luscious array of earthy tones. Artworks draw on both traditional Ngarrangkarni (Dreaming) stories and contemporary experience, helping maintain cultural connections to country and keeping stories alive in a rapidly changing environment.

Tim Melville Gallery is grateful to Warmun Art Centre for its guidance and support in presenting this first New Zealand exhibition of their work.
